As contemporary Indian art breaks forth on the global scene, women artists are leading the way.  The Dana Women Artists Series at Rutgers University presented a "Celebration of Women Artists of South Asia 2008" with an array of exhibitions and public programs. Through visual expression in all media, women artists of South Asia are challenging existing social oppression and gender discrimination, exploring their sense of place, and providing new models for the empowerment of women.

Organized by Brandeis University Women's Studies Research Center, Tiger by the Tail! Women Artists of India Transforming Culture featured provocative painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and video art that respond to a contemporary culture that includes ongoing patriarchal aggression and communal violence. In addition, Passage to Jersey: Women Artists from the South Asian Diaspora in Our Midst, a complementary show of U.S. based artists of South Asian origin was also on view.
