New Brunswick, NJ – The Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series presents, The Fearsome BMI: Women Artists and the Body, a group exhibition featuring the works of Nancy Fried, Ariane Lopez-Huici, Brenda Oelbaum, Monica Ong and Laura Splan. The exhibition will be on view from March 24 – May 5, 2014 in the Mary H. Dana Women Artist Series Galleries, Douglass Library, where a reception will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 4-6pm. The galleries and reception are free and open to the public.

Guest curated by Judith K. Brodsky and Ferris Olin, Founding Co-Directors of the Institute for Women and Art, the exhibition has been organized in conjunction with the Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) Consortium Initiative on Women and Health. The artworks on view will range in mediums and help to visually contextualize women and health topics that address issues and narratives exploring various facets of body image and socially recognized and imposed standards of beauty.

The exhibition highlights the IWL Consortium Initiative on Women and Health’s recognition of World Health Day on Monday, April 7th from 3:30-9pm with a conference titled, The Body Mass Index: Myth or Reality? Health, Wellness and Self Esteem in Women. The conference keynote address will be given by Jane Brody, New York Times Health Columnist and a dinner keynote speech will be given by Abigail Saguy, UCLA, author of What’s Wrong with Fat?. The conference panel discussions will address topics such as The Tyranny of Thin and The Reproductive Years and Beyond, with experts in the fields of nutrition, medicine, public health, education and feminist art and activism. The Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series is a program of the Institute for Women and Art (IWA) in partnership with Rutgers University Libraries. The IWA is a center of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI), Rutgers University. The Series, founded in 1971 by Joan Snyder, is the oldest continuous running exhibition space in the U.S. dedicated to making visible the work of emerging and established contemporary women artists.

Series Co-sponsors include: Associate Alumnae of Douglass College; Douglass Residential College; New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition and conference is co-sponsored by the IWL Consortium Initiative on Women and Health, Institute for Women and Art, and the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Funding is provided in part by the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

The Mary H. Dana Women Artist Series Galleries are located in the Douglass Library, 8 Chapel Drive, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
