Mary H. Dana Women Artist Series presents: An exhibition by the Brainstormers
Real Time focuses on issues connected to the realities of being a visual artist in the contemporary art world. In the public imagination, many believe the “artist” to be a self-destructive genius who spends each day in the studio caught up in the frenzy of inspiration, challenged by the extremes of addiction and poverty or the pressures of fame. ‘He’ is an outsider, free from the responsibilities of employment, relationships, and the common aspects of daily living. In an effort to dismantle this myth and to convey a more accurate portrait of the “artist,” Brainstormers//invited hundreds of contemporary artists across the country to share the intimate details of their daily lives. Viewers are presented with an intriguing collection of handwritten records, photographs, and survey findings that offer a glimpse into the disparate experiences, both surprising and familiar, of working artists.
Brainstormers is an art collective that, through public performance, exhibition, publication, the internet, and video, has forced discussion on a topic
that most would rather avoid: gross gender inequities in the contemporary New York Art World. In addition to their numerous interventions on the streets of New York and online, their work has been exhibited at many venues including the Brooklyn Museum, the Bronx Museum and Momenta Art. Current active members are Maria Dumlao, Elain Kaufmann, and Danielle Mysliwiec. Graduates of the Hunter College MFA Studio Art Program, all three artists maintain individual studio practices and actively exhibit work locally, nationally, and internationally.
