Poetries – Politics: An Interdisciplinary Colloquium

November 9, 2017 - November 10, 2017

Thursday, November 9, 9:15am-6:45pm | Friday, November 10, 9:30am-8pm

Poésies-Politiques / Poetries-Politics is an international conference drawing scholars and poets from around the globe to discuss and read texts illuminating the fluid and ever-changing relations between poetry and politics. Launched by the Department of French in the School of Arts and Sciences, and opening each day with the viewing of a student-curated multilingual political poetry exhibition, this conference represents a new and extended experiment in promoting collaboration among disciplines, cultures, and schools at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, both among faculty and departments and among students of different backgrounds studying in many different fields. The exhibition, which will include over 100 great political poems from Antiquity to the present representing a vast array of languages and cultures, will feature printed posters individually designed through a collaborative process with Visual Arts students from Mason Gross School of the Arts, as well as films on the poster-poems and on the “making” of the exhibition. The colloquium will then continue each day with talks and readings, with a particular emphasis on Africa on November 9, and, the next day, on Migrations within a wider global context. The event will close with a festive, multicultural, political poetry slam, featuring performances by Rutgers students; by Jhonel, a francophone slammer from Niger; and by the Latin-American group Rebel Diaz.

Join us for readings, papers, posters,
and a multilingual poetry slam!
