Cyberfeminist Bodies as Art, Action and Activism in the Digital Space

Even though women constitute over half of visual artists and internet users today, they are still subjected to gender-based oppression online. The rise of cyberfeminism in the 1990’s forged a path for artists to use new media technologies to challenge their present gender, race, and class structures. Faith Wilding, a significant artist in the cyberfeminist movement, argues that what was missing in the 90’s was a collaboration between feminist theorists, feminist artists, and popular women’s culture on the Internet. Now 25 years later, we are entering a new wave of cyber/digifeminism.

A.I.R. Gallery invites artists, curators, critics, and scholars to an exhibition and roundtable discussion on November 11. This will be an opportunity for us to rethink, challenge, and engage with our digital identities. We will examine how identity is performed through social media; how feminist artists use artistic practice to reclaim sexist digital spaces; and how new media influences feminist curatorial practices online. Invited artists include Daria Dorosh, Bang Geul Han, Amelia Marzec, and Marie Tomanová. The event will be curated by Gabriella Shypula from the Institute for Women’s Leadership at Rutgers University.
