Rosemary Candelario, Ph.D. will present excerpts of her new book, Flowers Cracking Concrete, which is the first in-depth study of the forty-year career of Eiko & Koma — two artists from Japan who have lived and worked in New York City since the mid-1970s, establishing themselves as innovative and influential modern and postmodern dancers. Eiko & Koma were named MacArthur Fellows in June of 1996, the first time in the program’s history that the foundation awarded a so-called “genius” fellowship to be shared by collaborators. They were John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellows in 1984 and in 2004, received the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for “lifetime contributions to the field of modern dance.” Eiko & Koma continue to choreograph, perform, and give workshops across the United States and around the world.
