Holly Trostle Brigham: Myth, Portraits and the Self
Douglass Library, Rutgers University
August 5 – September 27, 2013
New Brunswick, NJ – The Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series, a program of the Institute for Women and Art at Rutgers University, presents Holly Trostle Brigham: Myth, Portraits and the Self on view from August 5 – September 27, 2013 at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library Galleries. This exhibition is curated by Judith K. Brodsky and Ferris Olin, Founding Co-Directors of the Institute for Women and Art.
Painting portraits of herself in the guise of famed women, both real and imagined, Holly Trostle Brigham explores subjects of motherhood, sexuality, gender, and female power. She chooses to paint women that were determined and succeeded in environments that were hostile to women. Brigham states that through her paintings, she is responding to conventional depictions of women: “I create new images that show strong women in a non-objectified way. I also choose subjects that I feel a connection to because ultimately there is a merging of their story with mine, as I am the model for the portraits.” The artist is represented by ACA Galleries, New York, and following her exhibition at Rutgers University this fall, her works will be on view at Ursinus College, PA and George Washington University, Washington, DC.The Mary H. Dana Women Artist Series Galleries are located in the Mabel Smith Douglass Library, 8 Chapel Drive, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am – 4:30pm and weekends by appointment. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
