From the (Trans)gendered Body to the Cyborg: Feminism, Art, and Technology

Now in its fourth year, the annual series considers the most current critical issues and concerns for women artists, and celebrates Women in the Arts during National Women’s History Month. The first panel in the series will be held at The Tribeca Performing Arts Center located at The Borough of Manhattan Community College at 199 Chambers Street.* This event is part of Momentum: Women/Art/Technology.

The artists on this panel use technology to make art. They create work that asks us to consider Donna Haraway’s statement in The Cyborg Manifesto that technology eliminates the binary of male/female. Adrianne Wortzel creates scenarios for robots that engender juxtaposed points of view. Hana Iverson creates virtual rather than physical locations so that whether one is in the kitchen or the boardroom becomes irrelevant.  Jennifer Hall works with issues of gender and identity as they relate to the mind and how the mind and interactive art work together. Following presentations by the artists about their work, the moderators will raise a number ofissues among them, whether these artists are using technology to express content that is intentionally gender related or whether their art affects gender because it erases the binary in general. Artists in the past have focused on the fluidity of gender produced by cross-dressing, role-playing, and other physical mechanisms that change gender identity. This panel asks the question, How has our relationship to the body changed as various areas of technology, including medical technology, have advanced.

* The second panel in this series will be held in the Cantor Auditorium of The Brooklyn Museum, which is located at 200 Eastern Parkway.
